DISCOs’ Consumers May Get 30 Paisa Per Unit Relief
The Pakistani government has decided to refund excess electricity charges collected from consumers, bringing potential relief in the form of a 30-paisa per unit reduction in electricity costs for DISCOs’ consumers.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request for monthly fuel adjustment for February, stating that a total of 6.495 billion units of electricity were produced, while 6.666 billion units were supplied to power companies.
According to CPPA, the per-unit cost of electricity during February stood at Rs. 8.22. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to conduct a hearing on March 26 to decide on the refund request and the proposed tariff adjustment.
The breakdown of electricity generation sources for February is as follows:
27.12% from hydropower,
15.02% from local coal,
1.56% from imported coal,
10.32% from natural gas,
14.11% from imported LNG, and
26.59% from nuclear energy.
If approved, this refund initiative will provide much-needed relief to electricity consumers amid rising energy costs. The government’s move is expected to ease the financial burden on households and businesses, ensuring fair pricing in the power sector.
