Dananeer Mobeen Steps into Pakistani Cinema with Debut Film ‘Behnaz’, Faces Casting Controversy
Social media sensation turned television actress Dananeer Mobeen is making her cinematic debut in Behnaz, a film set in the culturally rich and football-famous neighborhood of Lyari, Karachi. The sports-themed movie features Dananeer alongside veteran actress Ayesha Omar, who will portray a football coach.
Helmed by filmmaker Abu Aleeha, known for Kukri, Super Punjabi, and Taxali Gate, Behnaz delves into the heart of Lyari’s football culture. The film has attracted attention not only for its storyline but also for the casting decision, which many online critics have called problematic.
Dananeer, who first captured public attention with her viral “Pawri Ho Rahi Hai” video, quickly rose through the entertainment ranks with successful roles in drama serials like Sinf-e-Aahan, Muhabbat Gumshuda Meri, and most recently, Meem Se Mohabbat opposite Ahad Raza Mir.
However, her role in Behnaz has sparked debate on social media. Critics argue that casting a non-local actress in a story likely inspired by the lives of Baloch and Afro-Baloch footballers from Lyari shows a disregard for authentic representation. One user remarked, “This isn’t a hot take — it’s truth. Lyari’s real essence deserves to be portrayed by its own people.”
Commenters further highlighted that Lyari, often called “Little Brazil”, has a vibrant local arts scene born out of resilience amid historical violence. Many feel the opportunity should have gone to local talent who reflect the community’s heritage.
Another user echoed the sentiment, “We keep seeing the same faces — it’s time to break that cycle.”
