Imran Khan’s Long March Contempt Case Referred from Constitutional to Regular Bench

On Thursday, the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench decided to pass the contempt of court proceedings against former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan to a standard bench, as reported by 24NewsHD TV.

During the session, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel inquired whether it wasn’t more appropriate for a regular bench to handle the matter.

Agreeing with this perspective, Imran Khan’s legal representative, Salman Akram Raja, stated that the case lacked any constitutional implications and suggested it should rightly be reviewed by a regular bench.

The additional attorney general also pointed out that a similar approach had been taken in the reserved seats case, where the contempt issue had likewise been shifted to a regular bench. He advised the same course of action be adopted here.

The contempt petition, originally filed in June 2022, accused Imran Khan of disregarding court instructions by extending the route of a political procession beyond the authorized boundary, reaching Jinnah Avenue. The government claimed this deviation led to road blockages, creating public inconvenience.
