Visa Waiver and Trade Growth Mark Hungary’s Strengthening Ties with Pakistan

In a significant diplomatic development, Pakistan and Hungary have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors while reinforcing their collaboration on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations. The understanding was reached during a high-level meeting in Islamabad between Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Hungary’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, who arrived in Pakistan at the invitation of Mr. Dar, accompanied by a top-tier business delegation.

During a joint press conference, Minister Szijjártó expressed satisfaction over the signing of a bilateral agreement to waive visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders, highlighting it as a key step toward strengthening diplomatic ties. In addition, both countries signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance collaboration in the fields of culture and archaeology, acknowledging the rich and diverse historical heritage shared by both nations.

The two sides also emphasized their mutual commitment to expanding trade and economic engagement. Minister Szijjártó applauded the doubling of bilateral trade volumes, and noted Hungary’s active involvement in food security and water management projects within Pakistan. He also reaffirmed Hungary’s continued educational support, stating that 400 scholarships are offered annually to Pakistani students, fostering people-to-people linkages and academic exchange.

Calling Pakistan a trusted partner, the Hungarian minister pledged his country’s support for the extension of the GSP Plus status for Pakistan beyond 2027, citing mutual economic interests and the potential for broader trade cooperation. He further praised Pakistan’s historic struggle for independence and sovereignty, drawing parallels with Hungary’s own national journey.

This visit reflects a shared vision for building a stronger, multifaceted relationship between the two nations—rooted in diplomacy, trade, cultural exchange, and strategic global cooperation.
