Sunny Deol Shares Balanced Perspective Amid Abir Gulaal Controversy Over Fawad Khan’s Return to Bollywood.
Veteran Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has spoken out amid the brewing controversy around Abir Gulaal, a film marking Pakistani star Fawad Khan’s comeback to Indian cinema after nearly a decade.
In an interview with HT City, Deol—known for his nationalistic roles in films like Border and Gadar—chose to sidestep the politics, instead voicing a broader, more inclusive sentiment.
“I prefer not to delve into political territory because that’s where complications begin,” Deol said when asked about his views on Pakistani actors featuring in Indian films.
Deol emphasized his identity as a performer above all else: “We are actors—we work for everyone, no matter where they are. Whether someone is watching from Mars or anywhere else, our work is for all. There’s nothing more to it. The world is evolving, and we should think globally. More nations, more harmony—that’s the way forward.”
His remarks come as political resistance grows, especially from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which has raised objections to the release of Abir Gulaal in Maharashtra, pointing to Khan’s involvement as the sticking point.
Fawad Khan, who gained immense popularity with films like Khoobsurat (2014) and Kapoor & Sons (2016), stepped away from Bollywood after an informal ban on Pakistani artists was enforced in 2016. However, in 2023, the Bombay High Court rejected a plea demanding a formal prohibition, affirming that art should not be politicized.
Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulaal is set against the scenic backdrop of London and promises a heartwarming blend of romance, humor, and emotional resonance, starring Khan alongside Vaani Kapoor.
The film is slated for theatrical release on May 9.
As political debates swirl, fans of Fawad Khan are excitedly counting down the days to see him grace the big screen once again.
